Learn to invest in mutual funds

Pearl City Public Library will host a free workshop on investing in mutual funds from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 28.

The workshop will be led by Dwight Melton, director of the Aloha Hawai'i Chapter of the National Association of Investors Corporation. It will provide an overview of mutual funds and a simple process to follow to make investing uncomplicated.

The workshop will be held in the library's meeting room. To request a sign language interpreter, call the library by Monday. To register for the workshop or for details, call the Pearl City Public Library, 453-6566.


Arizona librarians join in storytime

Kailua Public Library will present a special Keiki Storytime Wednesday featuring two guest storytellers from Arizona.

The free program will be held in the library's juvenile room from 11 a.m. to 11:45 a.m.

Trisha Waichulaitis and Gail Benton, children's librarians from Mesa Public Library, will read stories and lead sing-alongs.

Keiki Storytime is designed for preschoolers from ages 2 1/2 to 4.

Children must be accompanied by an adult.


Library for disabled reduces hours

The Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped has reduced its Saturday hours.

The new hours are 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The library is open from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

During off-hours, books can still be ordered by leaving a message on the answering machine at 733-8444.

The library is at 402 Kapahulu Ave.


UHPA elects new officers

Professor Mary E. Tiles, an expert in the history and philosophy of mathematics, science and technology, has been elected president of the University of Hawai'i Professional Assembly's board of directors. UHPA represents 3,300 faculty in the statewide UH system of 10 campuses. Tiles' term is two years.

Tiles, who holds an appointment in the department of philosophy at UH-Manoa, is co-chair of the union's collective bargaining committee and was vice president before her selection as president. She is also a past chairwoman of the UH-Manoa Faculty Senate.

Tiles succeeds professor Alex Malahoff, who has taken a position as chief executive officer for the Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences Ltd. in New Zealand.

Others elected include:

  • Vice president: Sally Pestana, associate professor, Kapi'olani Community College.
  • Treasurer: L. Thomas Ramsey, professor, UH-Manoa.
  • Secretary: Mari Yoshihara, assistant professor, UH-Manoa.
  • Executive committee members at large: Herbert Coyle, counselor, Maui Community College; Ruth Horie, librarian, UH-Manoa; William Puette, director, UH-West O'ahu.
