UH soccer team will try to end four-game losing streak

The University of Hawai'i women's soccer team will try to snap its four-game losing streak against Long Island tonight at 7 in the opening game of the OHANA Hotels & Resorts Shootout at Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium.

The tournament continues on Saturday when Long Island (2-3-0) plays Long Beach State (0-5-1) at 7 p.m. and concludes on Monday when Hawai'i (1-4-1) plays Long Beach State at 5 p.m.
OHANA Hotels & Resorts Shootout
This is the third tournament Hawai'i has hosted this season and the second in two weeks.
Hawai'i's offense is statistically among the leaders in the nine-team Western Athletic Conference. The Rainbow Wahine rank third in shots (95), points (29), assists (9) and are tied for third in goals (10). UH begins conference play Oct. 11 against Tulsa.
Hawai'i's offense will be led by strikers Arlene Devitt and Natasha Kai. The two have combined to score six of the team's 10 goals this season. Devitt was named to the Outrigger Hotels & Resorts Soccer Classic all-tournament team last week along with teammates Krystalynn Ontai, Jessica Uecker and Mia Moe. Goalie Mahie Atay is among the WAC leaders in goals against average (3rd, 1.59), saves (5th, 25) and saves per game (6th, 5.00).
Long Island is trying regain the success it had three years ago when it won the Northeast Conference title and made a trip to the NCAA tournament. Rosette Rough leads the Blackbirds in scoring with four points and two goals.
SURFING
Dorian wins: Hawai'i's Shane Dorian won his heat at the Association of Surfing Professionals' Figueria Pro in Portugal yesterday.
Dorian defeated South Africa's Paul Canning, 15.75 to 13.9, in choppy, 3-foot surf.
In women's competition, Hawai'i's Megan Abubo and Rochelle Ballard advanced to round three and Keala Kennelly to round two.
MIXED MARTIAL ARTS
Vitale victorious: Grappling Unlimited's Falaniko Vitale defeated Pasquel Gossett by submission in the first round of a light heavyweight bout Tuesday night in the Super Brawl at the Blaisdell Arena.
Vitale, a former University of Hawai'i football player, won by arm bar.
In another bout, Jeff Curan knocked out Baret Yoshida, also of Grappling Unlimited, in the second round.
GOLF
Lee level: Hawai'i's Regan Lee shot even-par 71 in yesterday's third round of the Gateway Tour's Johnson Bank Invitational.
Lee is at 2-under 211, tied for 27th. The leaders are Greg Bruckner, Joel Hendry and Aaron Hickman at 8-under 205.
VOLLEYBALL
BYUH beaten: Samorodok, a professional team from Russia's second-highest league, swept Brigham Young-Hawai'i, 30-20, 30-15, 30-20, last night at Cannon Activities Center.
Chun Yi Lin had 10 kills for BYUH.
