A concert for world harmony

South Asians living in Hawai'i hope to give the community a glimpse into their culture through Jhankar, a concert presented by Milun, a nonprofit club that promotes the culture of South Asia, which includes India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka.

The concert, 7-9 p.m. Saturday at the University of Hawai'i's Orvis Auditorium, will feature classical and folk dances, instrumental and vocal numbers, and a "qawwali," or singing duel between men and women.

The event won't just benefit the local community, said Milun president Saleem Ahmed. "This is an evolving process of South Asians getting to know each other and trying to see the commonalities between their respective subcultures," said Ahmed, who was born in India and raised in Pakistan. Milun members hope to promote the importance of religious and political tolerance, not just throughout their countries, but worldwide.

Tickets are $10; money will be used for educational purposes to enhance the understanding of South Asia. 371-9360.

For teddy and other stuffed friends

If you have a teddy bear with a boo boo, you can give it some TLC at the free Teddy Bear Clinic & Fair, 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church, on the corner of Ke'eaumoku and Nehoa streets.

The clinic for the stuffed animals and other soft toys will have an actual medical staff on hand to provide physical checkups, said organizer Bev Bawden. While the Teddy Bear-devoted event is all in fun, it will also be "a benefit for the children to see that it's not so bad to see a doctor," Bawden said.

Balloons, games, electric cars, pony rides, a petting zoo, bouncers and food round out the fair's offerings. 532-1111.

A little 'Hysterical' perspective

Don't let the title of the play keep you away.

"Hysterical: A Short History of the Vibrator" is "funny and it's based on fact," assures Hilary Wright, who wrote the comedy.

"Hysterical," presented by the University of Hawai'i-Manoa's Department of Theatre and Dance, and directed by Jennifer Goodlander, kicks off the 11th season of the Earle Ernst Lab Theatre's Late Night Theatre. Showtimes are 10:30 p.m. Saturday and Sept. 27 and 28, and 8 p.m. Sunday.

The play is set in Victorian London, Wright said, and is a fictitious account of the real-life circumstances that gave the world the vibrator. The story follows the physician who invents the device, and his wife, who discovers it in his office.

Tickets go on sale an hour before the play each night of the production. Prices are $7 general, $6 for students, seniors, military and UH faculty, and $3 for UHM students. 956-7655.
