142 still in running to be firefighters

A total of 142 prospective Honolulu Fire Department recruits passed the department's physical ability test at Blaisdell Center Exhibition Hall.

Of 200 candidates who were invited, 183 showed up, Fire Capt. Richard Soo said. Of those, 90 were tested Wednesday and 93 yesterday.

Next will be a swimming test, a medical test and an interview. Those who pass all four phases will qualify for the Fire Department's next recruit class, which begins training in March.


Wastewater spill halted in Aliamanu

About 400 gallons of wastewater spilled Thursday at Aliamanu Military Reservation, the Army reported.

The spill began at about 9 p.m. and was stopped in less than an hour. The wastewater went into a storm drain and was confined to the military reservation.


Wai'anae beaches get cleanup today

The Leeward community and the city will join forces to clean beaches in Wai'anae from 7 a.m. to noon today, beginning at Nanakuli District Park.
