Endorsements for primary recapped

Today's a busy day with shopping, beach, errands and, yes, all those football games.

But don't forget to take a moment out to do something good for yourself, your community and your state. Vote.

As you go to the polls, The Advertiser asks that you consider these candidates in contested primary battles whom we have endorsed in this important primary election:

Governor/lieutenant governor

Democratic primary:

Ed Case for governor and Matt Matsunaga for lieutenant governor.

Republican primary:

Linda Lingle for governor and Dalton Tanonaka for lieutenant governor.


U.S. Congress

• 2nd District (Neighbor Islands-Rural O'ahu):

Democratic primary:

Patsy Mink.

Republican primary:

No endorsement


Board of Education

• 4th District (Central O'ahu): Grace Dixon.

• 6th District (Windward O'ahu): Laura H. Thielen.

• O'ahu-at-large (3 seats): Karen Knudsen, Shannon Ajifu and Carolyn Golojuch.

Because there only two candidates vying for the Maui seat, both will advance to the general election.

And remember: Voters on O'ahu can vote for all five seats; the residency requirement applies to the candidates, not to voters.


Honolulu City Council

• District 1 (Wai'anae-'Ewa): Cynthia Rezentes.

• District 2 (Wahiawa-North Shore): Ernie Martin.

• District 3 (Windward O'ahu): Donald Bremner.

• District 4 (East Honolulu): Mike Abe.

• District 5 (Makiki, Kapahulu): Ann Kobayashi.

• District 6 (Nu'uanu-Kaka'ako): John Steelquist.

• District 7 (Kalihi-Airport): Romy Cachola.

• District 8 (Pearl City, Waipi'o): Incumbent Gary Okino is unopposed.

• District 9 (Central O'ahu): Nestor Garcia.


State Senate

• 1st District (Hamakua, S. Hilo):

Democratic: Lorraine Inouye.

• 4th District (Kahului):

Democratic: Jan Buen.

• 5th District (W. & S. Maui):

Republican: No endorsement.

• 7th District (Kaua'i, Ni'ihau):
