Wong, Metzger will play in Beach Volleyball Classic

Punahou graduates Kevin Wong and Stein Metzger, the top-ranked American team on the international tour, will play in this weekend's 14th annual Riggers Beach Volleyball Classic.

The tournament offers $3,000 in cash and prizes. Play begins at 9 a.m. today and tomorrow, with the finals expected to be around 3 p.m. tomorrow at Waikiki.

Wong played in the inaugural Olympic beach volleyball competition in 2000. Soon after, he hooked up with Metzger. The two former UCLA All-Americans have won $62,400 on the FIVB (Federation Internacionale de Volleyball) tour this year and are ranked ninth.

This weekend's field is also expected to include Alika Williams and Stevie Li, Torry Tukuafu and Kyle Denitz, Lia Young and Chastity Nobriga, Tanya Fuamatu and Heidi Ilustre, and Janice Harrer and Karrie Poppinga.

Bragado-Wood eliminated: Natalie Cook and Kerri Pottharst, of Australia, eliminated Danalee Bragado and Ali Wood, of the United States, 21-13, 21-9, in the first round of the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour stop at Vitoria, Brazil, yesterday.

Bragado, a Punahou graduate from Makakilo, and Wood earned a spot in the elimination rounds despite losing earlier yesterday, 16-21, 21-18, 15-7, to Diane DeNecochea and Barbra Fontana in pool play.

Bragado and Wood split $3,900.

Today's semifinals feature Holly McPeak and Elaine Youngs playing Shelda Bede and Adriana Behar, while top-seeded Missy May and Kerri Walsh meets Ana Paula Connelly and Tatiana Minello.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL

Hawai'i Bowl deadline: University of Hawai'i football season ticket holders have until Sept. 28 to buy their usual seats for the ConAgra Foods Hawai'i Bowl.

Season ticket holders also will be allowed to upgrade their seat location and purchase additional tickets, pending availability.

The Hawai'i Bowl features a Western Athletic Conference team against a team from Conference USA on Dec. 25. If the UH Warriors win at least seven games, they are guaranteed participation.

Season ticket holders may reserve their seats at the UH Ticket Office (Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.) for by calling the UH Ticket office at 944-BOWS (944-2697) Mondays through Fridays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
