Motorcyclist hospitalized after hit-and-run

Advertiser Staff

Police investigated a hit-and-run near Hale'iwa last night that sent a 19-year-old man to The Queen's Medical Center in serious condition.

Emergency Medical Services personnel, firefighters and police were called to Weed Circle at Kamehameha Highway near the Joseph Leong Bypass Road at 5:40 p.m., when witnesses reported that a motorcycle had been pushed off the road by another vehicle.

After pushing the man off the road, the driver or a passenger in the other vehicle jumped out and took the motorcycle, leaving the 19-year-old lying on the side of the road, authorities said.

EMS workers sent the man to Queen's by military helicopter. EMS district supervisor Robert Pedro said the man was at first thought to be in critical condition but his vital signs were more stable by the time he was transported.

When police questioned the man, authorities said, he told them he did not own the motorcycle and could not remember the name of the owner. As a part of their investigation, police are trying to determine who owned the bike.
