Food drive scheduled

A food drive to benefit the River of Life Mission will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Market City Shopping Center in Kaimuki.

People donating at least three canned food items or $3 will receive a book of coupons for free items from participating Market City merchants.

The mission is seeking high-protein canned goods and nonperishable foods such as Spam, vienna sausage, tuna, peanut butter and pasta. The food is boxed and delivered to low-income families, seniors, single mothers and disabled people.

Since Sept. 11 last year, the mission has seen a 30 percent increase in people seeking food.

The show is intended for families and educators of children in public and private K-12 schools, and covers topics — such as Hawaiian immersion schools and charter schools — not often featured on commercial channels, said executive producer Henry Meyer.
