UH soccer player named WAC player

By Brandon Masuoka

University of Hawaii women's soccer player Jessica Uecker was named Western Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week for her efforts during Hawai'i's 6-1 victory over Long Island University on Thursday.

Uecker, a sophomore central defender from Rapid City, South Dakota, helped Hawai'i end its four-match losing streak by limiting the Blackbirds to just two shots on goal. Hawai'i had 42 shots.

Uecker is the second Hawai'i soccer player to earn weekly honors from the conference. Freshman striker Natasha Kai was named the WAC Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 3.

Uecker, a transfer from South Carolina, has anchored the Hawai'i defense that has been thinned by injuries. Uecker was also voted to the Outrigger Hotels & Resorts Soccer Classic All-Tournament team earlier this season.

Hawai'i (2-4-1) plays Long Beach State (1-5-1) today at 5 p.m. in the OHANA Hotels & Resorts Shootout at Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
