Maui teen driver in crash identified

A third person fatally injured in a weekend traffic accident on Maui has been identified as Fleming Bascar Jr.

Bascar, 17, was pronounced dead Saturday morning at Maui Memorial Medical Center of injuries he received in a two-car crash Friday night Honoapi'ilani Highway in Wailuku.

Bascar was driving a car that crossed the highway's center line and crashed into an oncoming car carrying a couple from Poway, Calif., police said.

Two of Bascar's passengers — 17-year-old Kauilamakahikina Neula and 16-year-old Joshua Ayonayon — were pronounced dead at the scene.

Bascar's two other passengers, both teenage boys, and the couple also were taken to the hospital.

Meeting Thursday on Weed & Seed

A second organizational meeting of residents hoping to expand the Weed & Seed law enforcement program from Chinatown into the Downtown, Kaka'ako and Kalakaua neighborhoods will be held at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at Makiki Christian Church, 829 Pensacola Ave.

The Chinatown program's eastern border is Nu'uanu Avenue downtown; the western border, Kapalama Stream. Ala Moana residents want it expanded to Kalakaua Avenue.

Weed & Seed relies on community efforts and tough legal penalties to "weed out" crime, then applies crime prevention, intervention, treatment and neighborhood revitalization to "seed" a safer community.

Weed & Seed got its Hawai'i start in 1998 in Kalihi-Palama/Chinatown, which has seen a 70 percent drop in crime in the past four years. The Waipahu program began in late 2000, and drug crimes there have fallen by 78 percent.

The arrest was made based on information received from police sources.

Man, 22, suspected of firearm violation

A 22-year-old man was arrested for firearms offenses early yesterday on suspicion of possessing an illegal sawed-off shotgun.

The man was a passenger in a vehicle that was involved in a traffic collision on Ha'iku Road and He'eia Street at 12:25 a.m. He was seen by witnesses taking the weapon from the back of the vehicle and leaving the scene. Police found the shotgun in a storm drain, and arrested the man found nearby.

The man was released without charges pending further investigation.
