Police officer, woman in accident

A woman and police officer escaped serious injury today in a traffic collision at the intersection of Cooke Street and Kapi‘olani Boulevard. The 7:30 a.m. collision did not affect the flow of rush-hour traffic.

This Honolulu Police Department car near the intersection of Kapi'olani Boulevard and Cooke Street was involved in a collision with a Toyota, which came to rest on the corner near the Lexus dealership.

Police Sgt. Curtis Sakamoto said the officer entered the intersection heading mauka on Cooke Street with his siren on and blue light flashing. The officer was responding to a report of men fighting at Ward Avenue and Kina‘u Street. The report came in at 7:27 a.m.

While in the intersection, the patrol unit collided with a Toyota Corolla. A woman who was in the car was taken to The Queen’s Medical Center in stable condition. The officer suffered cuts to his arm.

FBI charges man in bank robbery

The FBI yesterday charged 32-year-old Sonny Hoopai with robbing the HomeStreet Bank last Tuesday. Hoopai was arrested Saturday at a hotel in Waikiki.

Man stable after being shot in chest

A 25-year-old man with no known permanent local address who was shot in the chest last night is in stable condition at The Queen’s Medical Center, police said.

The man was dropped off at the Wai‘anae Coast Comprehensive Center at 9:20 p.m. and later transferred to Queen’s.

He is believed to have been shot on the beach in Makaha but police said the victim is not cooperating with the investigation.

Man, 20, charged with robbery

Police yesterday charged a 20-year-old man with second-degree robbery in connection with an incident Sunday morning in Waikiki.

Jason Garner, who has no known permanent local address, and two 16-year-old boys were identified by a 26-year-old man who reported being assaulted and robbed of his wallet Sunday at 12:50 a.m. on the 1900 block of Kalakaua Avenue.

The suspects were arrested yesterday on Pau Street.

Garner is charged with second-degree robbery and is being held in lieu of $11,000 bail. The two boys have been sent to the Alder Street detention facility pending charges.

Woman charged with car theft

A 19-year-old woman was charged last night with auto theft. Tiffany Ikeda is being held in lieu of $15,000 bail. Ikeda was in a car parked on Pupukahi Street in Waipahu’s “Weed & Seed” anti-crime district when she was arrested Sunday at 10:17 p.m., police said.

A 17-year-old boy, who was also in the car, was also arrested but released pending further investigation.

Man critically hurt in motorcycle crash

A 20-year-old Moanalua man who crashed his motorcycle last night near the Gulick Avenue overpass was listed in critical condition today at The Queen’s Medical Center.

The man had come off the H-1 Freeway and was on the Middle Street off-ramp when he crashed at 9:57 p.m., police said. He was wearing a helmet.
After the accident, police closed a section of the roadway until 1 a.m.

Man found in yacht harbor identified

The medical examiner’s office today identified the man whose body was recovered from Ala Wai Yacht Harbor yesterday as Alvin Frank Neal, 83.

Neal’s body was found behind his sailboat, “Wind Passage,” which is moored at slip No. 99 shortly before 11 a.m. Injuries were consistent with an accidental fall, police said after conferring with an investigator from the medical examiner’s office. It appears Neal injured himself in the fall and then drowned, they said.

The case has been classified as an unattended death, pending autopsy findings.

Missing kayaker found at hotel

Police today found a Long Beach, Calif., woman who firefighters were searching for last night in Kailua after the kayak she rented was found on the beach near Dune Circle.

Officer Joe Self of the police Missing Persons Detail said the woman and her niece were located today at a Waikiki hotel. The woman left the kayak on the beach because she and the girl were unable to drag it back to the concession, Self said.

The visitors then caught a bus back to Waikiki. They were located with assistance from security officials from Waikiki hotels, Self said.
