THE LOCAL ANGLE: That was Sir Anthony Hopkins, making the rounds of Maui restaurants (Capische) and lu'au (Outrigger Wailea Resort) recently. Bought some art-gallery stuff to take home, too, and never the menacing soul he's become known for Hannibal Lecter. Look for him in "Red Dragon," due Oct. 4. ...
Dwayne Johnson wasted no time after arriving here for "Helldorado" filming. The Rock was sequestered in the Pipeline Cafe's private party room (the Tiki Lounge) last week, where a birthday party for a regular local customer also was under way. ...
HERE 'N' THERE: Ken Rosene's memorial service, Thursday at the Elks Club, was a gathering of notables who shared stories and nuggets about him and the shows he presented in his heyday. A clever "All Access" backstage pass, bearing Rosene's smiling face, was handed to each arriving friend and patron, past and present, and while music was sparse (Jerry Santos and Henry Kapono sang), memories were abundant. Collectibles from his shows here were displayed, and the camaraderie from supporters touched Ken's brother, Dennis Rosene. "He was the risk-taker in the family," said Dennis. "I'm in insurance, and if you remember 'Ozzie and Harriet,' he was Ricky and I was David he was going to have fun, no matter what." ...
The female voice singing "The Prayer" with Josh Groban in the 9/11 Verizon spot on TV and on radio is that of local girl Jewl Anguay, who has been Nala in "The Lion King" in Los Angeles. The spot was produced by David Foster, and Groban's Web site was flooded with queries about who the mystery fem voice was. Now we all know. ...
Takeo Kobayashi is off to Japan with Miss Hawai'i USA Alicia Michioka and Miss Hawai'i Teen USA Erin Madden, with plans to help promote the Islands at the World Fair, which will attract 350,000 people. ...
NIGHT MUSINGS: Loretta Ables Sayre, back in her Saturday singing slot at the Veranda in the Kahala Mandarin Oriental Hawaii, has been getting swarms of her "You Somebody" cast mates from the recent Diamond Head Theatre hit in which she starred even Ray Bumatai, sans hair because of chemotherapy, but with his sense of humor intact. Ables Sayre was particularly pleased with TJ Tario and his brother TX, who played Honolulu Boy Choir auditioners in the musical. TJ is 8, a classical concert pianist who will perform Oct. 26 with the Honolulu Symphony Orchestra; he took over Betty Loo Taylor's keyboard at the Veranda and whisked through a concerto with amazing dexterity. TX just made it into the DHT's Shooting Stars youth group, with whom Ables Sayre will have a reunion since they and she will perform at the upcoming 'Ilima Awards on Oct. 14. ...
Actor Don Johnson checked out entertainer Augie Rey recently at the Royal Hawaiian's Surf Room, and found they share something in common: Both consume protein bars on the Dr. Atkins diet, and the actor gave the singer a box of 'em. Since February, Rey has shed 42 pounds. He hasn't lost his appeal, though, with a parade of folks in the audience recently, including Melveen Leed, Jimmy Borges, Frank B. Shaner, Albert Maligmat, Yvette Moore, Alfredo Romero, Benedict Palmeri, Sonya Mendez, Damon Wayans, Tyson Bedford, actor Bob Conrad and Stuart Gaston. ...

Correction: A previous version of this column was incorrect. It should have said actor Bob Conrad not the late Bob Crane was among those attending a comedy show at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel.
