Man, 83, may have drowned after fall

An 83-year-old man may have drowned after injuring himself in a fall at Ala Wai Yacht Harbor.

The body recovered yesterday between slips 98 and 99 at the yacht harbor shortly before 11 a.m. had injuries consistent with an accidental fall, police said after conferring with an investigator from the medical examiner's office.

The case has been classified as an unattended death, pending autopsy findings.

His body was recovered in the water at the rear of the boat.


Wai'anae man, 47, arrested in fight

Gunshots were fired during a fight between a group of men Sunday at a convenience store in Makaha but no one was injured.

Police arrested a Wai'anae man, 47, on suspicion of attempted murder and first-degree terroristic threatening. The 6 p.m. incident at the 7-Eleven store at 85-010 Farrington Highway started as an argument between the man and a 32-year-old male acquaintance.

When several of the younger man's friends intervened, the Wai'anae man allegedly went to his parked vehicle and brought out a .22-caliber revolver. Two shots were fired during a struggle for the weapon, police said.


Big Island police looking for boy, 15

Big Island police are looking for a 15-year-old boy who has been missing from his Hilo residence since July 24.

The missing boy, Mathew Miller, is described as 5 feet 6, about 161 pounds and having brown hair and hazel eyes.

Anyone with information about his whereabouts is asked to call Officer Peter Kualii of the Hilo Juvenile Aid Section at 961-2373 or the police non-emergency telephone number at 935-3311.

Big Isle firefighters pull five from crater

Big Island fire crews pulled five people out of a 60-foot-deep crater on the slopes of Mauna Kea Sunday night.

Fire crews were called to the crater near the Onizuka Astronomy Center shortly before 5 p.m.

Fire officials said the people rappelled down the crater, but did not have the proper equipment to climb back up. The rescue lasted several hours and no injuries were reported.

A Big Island firefighter was severely injured Sept. 11 when he fell down a 100-foot lava tube searching for a missing group of hunters who turned up later.


Man, 61, arrested in bus-driver attack

A 61-year-old Red Hill man was arrested Saturday for allegedly punching a city bus driver. The incident at Kamehameha Highway and Laumaka Street in Kalihi was reported at 7:35 p.m.

Another rider on the bus came to the driver's aid, police said. Police are seeking charges of third-degree assault.


Hilo man sought on bench warrants

Big Island police are looking for a 21-year-old man wanted on two outstanding bench warrants for contempt of court.

Eric Fontes Jr. formerly lived at a Kulana Street address in Hilo.

Anyone with information about Fontes' whereabouts is asked to call Detective Jeremie Evangelista of the Hilo Criminal Investigation section at 961-2377 or the police non-emergency number at 935-3311.

Woman, boy face car-theft charges

Police arrested a 19-year-old woman and 17-year-old boy in Waipahu on suspicion of occupying a stolen vehicle.

A patrol officer noticed the boy sitting in a car parked on Pupukahi Street, which is within the Waipahu "Weed & Seed" anti-crime district, police said.

A check with radio dispatch found the vehicle's license plates to be stolen, and the officer arrested the juvenile, police said.

The woman returned to the vehicle and told the officer she had driven the car, police said. She was also arrested.
