Work to close highway lanes

Portions of the highways on the Pali in Kalihi and East O'ahu will be closed through Friday for construction and survey projects.

The Kailua-bound right lane of the Pali Highway just above Castle Junction will be closed from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. for the installation of telephone duct lines. The same project also requires closing the Kamehameha Highway left-turn lane at Castle Junction to Kailua for the same time period.

In Kalihi one lane of Honolulu-bound traffic on Likelike Highway will be closed between 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. from Valley View Drive to the pedestrian overpass at Kula Kolea Drive for construction of a retaining wall, and from Burmeister Overpass to Valley View Drive for survey work. One Kane'ohe-bound lane from Valley View Drive to Burmeister Overpass will be closed from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. for survey work.

In East O'ahu, one Honolulu- or Kokohead-bound lane of Kalaniana'ole Highway will be closed from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. between Ainakoa Avenue and West Hind Drive for pavement striping and guard rail installation.

Pearl library 'Read-Out' set

Pearl City Public Library will present a "Read-Out" Friday in observance of National Banned Books Week.

The Read-Out is for children in grade three or higher. Parents are encouraged to attend, and there will be two simultaneous programs — one for children, the other for young adults.

Guest readers and library staff will read aloud excerpts from banned and challenged children's and young adults' books. Library staff will explain why and who challenged the books, including J.K. Rowling's "Harry Potter" series.

Read-Outs will be held in libraries and book stores nationwide under the auspices of the American Library Association and the Center for the Book of the Library of Congress.

Guest readers will include Andy Yamaguchi and Scott Ishikawa of The Honolulu Advertiser, and faculty members of Highlands Intermediate School and Pearl City High School.

Pearl City Public Library is holding the Read-Out program to promote awareness of the censorship of books and the rights of parents to select books for their own children.
