Rainbow Wahine tie Long Beach St., 1-1

Freshman forward Natasha Kai scored at 45:35 as the University Hawai'i women's soccer team tied Long Beach State, 1-1, last night in the OHANA Hotels & Resorts Shootout at the Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Park.

The 49ers and Rainbows finished with 1-0-1 records, but Long Beach State was awarded the tournament title because it allowed fewer goals. Long Island finished 0-2.

Kai volleyed in a shot off a cross from sophomore midfielder Joelle Sugai.

Abie Curry scored an unassisted goal for the 49ers at 5:37.

Both teams couldn't score in the two 10-minute overtime periods.

Long Beach State outshot Hawai'i, 24-16.

Rainbows forward Arlene Devitt was issued a red card at 41:38, and will be forced to sit out Hawai'i's match with Weber State on Friday.

Hawai'i moved to 2-4-2, while Long Beach State moved to 1-5-2.

GOLF

Warriors in last: The University of Hawai'i men's golf team is last, 47 strokes off the lead, after the first round of the Pacific Invitational at Stockton, Calif.

UCLA leads the 14-team tournament with a 557 total. Hawai'i shot a 604 at the Reserve at Spanos Park Golf Course. Hawai'i's leading golfer is James Beston, who is tied for 44th with a 146 total.

Rainbows last, too: The University of Hawai'i women's golf team is last and 37 strokes off the pace after the first round of the Pioneer Highlands Ranch Intercollegiate at Denver.

Iowa State leads the seven-team tournament with a 295 total. The Rainbows shot a 332 on the Highlands Ranch Golf Course.

Hawai'i's leading golfer is Tara Chappell, who is tied for 21st at 79.

Ko'olau Challenge: Randy Shibuya shot a final-round, 2-under-par 72 to capture the Aloha Shoyu Ko'olau Challenge at Ko'olau Golf Club on Sunday.

Shibuya finished with a 142, five strokes ahead of Blaine Kimura, who shot a 78 on Sunday.

Travis Toyama was third after a 73-148.

The Ko'olau Challenge was the fifth of seven tournaments of the Amatour Hawai'i series.

Gateway Tour: Hawai'i's Regan Lee shot a 2-over-par 73 in the opening round of the Gateway Tour's Epson Tour Championship at the TPC at Scottsdale (Ariz.) Stadium Course.

Rob Rashell and Chris Sessler shot 65s to share the lead. The tournament runs through Thursday.
