"An Untold Triumph: The Story of the 1st & 2nd Filipino Infantry Regiments" is a documentary produced for PBS by filmmakers Stephanie Castillo of Honolulu and Noel Izon of Washington, D.C.
The premiere is set for 6:30 p.m. on Nov. 4 at the Neal Blaisdell Center Concert Hall, as part of the Hawaii International Film Festival.
About 300 of the 7,000 regimental members came from Hawai'i, Castillo said, and the survivors are being sought to attend the premiere and a reception in their honor. Widows of the men or their families also are invited to contact the filmmakers.
"An Untold Triumph," now undergoing final editing, is narrated by actor Lou Diamond Phillips, who is part Filipino. The film, a project seven years in the making, will tour Neighbor Islands during the film festival, starting Nov. 10.
Screenings are set for Nov. 17 in Sacramento and Jan. 30 at the Smithsonian Institution.
PBS has not yet determined which of its series will showcase the documentary, Castillo said, but producers anticipate it will be televised sometime next spring.
Regimental members, most of them teens at the time they were drafted or volunteered, received basic training at Schofield Barracks or on the Mainland before being assigned to assist Gen. Douglas MacArthur in retaking the Philippines from the Japanese.
Members or their family members can contact project adviser Domingo Los Banos of Pearl City, 456-2329, or by e-mail: Lbdom@hotmail.com.
