Woman mugged in Kapahulu theft

A 30-year-old woman was mugged in the front yard of her Kapahulu home last night by a man who fled with her purse in a stolen black Nissan pickup truck, driven by another man.

Neighbors of the Kapahulu woman, who was assaulted at 7:20 p.m. at her Catherine Street residence, provided police with the truck's license number, JRG 969. The plates are registered to a Nissan pickup that was reported stolen, police said.

The woman struggled briefly with the man over the purse but was struck, possibly with a sharp object, police said. She suffered facial cuts and was taken to Kaiser Permanente Moanalua Medical Center.

The same suspects may have been involved in the theft of a purse earlier at a shopping center in Hawai'i Kai, according to police from the East Honolulu patrol district. The getaway vehicle in that case was also a black pickup truck.

Police said the purse was taken from a shopping cart being pushed by woman. The woman was not injured.

There have been no arrests in either case.

Robber sought after bank heist

The main branch of Bank of Hawai'i at 111 S. King St. was robbed today by a man who presented a demand note to a teller.

The robbery was reported at 7:45 a.m. The suspected robber was last seen fleeing on foot toward the Fort Street Mall.

Man arrested after ramming own car

A 34-year-old Kuli'ou'ou man was arrested after he rammed his car into another of his vehicles that was being stolen early yesterday, police said.

Police say the man, who lives on Kuli'ou'ou Road, saw someone driving off with his car at 12:34 a.m. He jumped into another car and chased the robber down Kalaniana'ole Highway, ramming it from behind at high speed, police said.

The man was arrested on attempted murder charges. The 16-year-old boy believed to be the driver of the stolen vehicle was arrested on auto theft charges.
