Kahala project update planned

Chuck Swanson, president of Kahala Nui Senior Living Community Center, will give an update tomorrow on the senior project planned for the Star of the Sea campus at the Wai'alae-Kahala Neighborhood Board meeting, 7 p.m. at Wesley United Methodist Church, 1350 Hunakai St.

The board also will discuss the policy on board member absences, and proposed landscaping improvements at the Kahala Chevron station.

Safer pesticide use taught

Hui Malama o Ke Kai will present a workshop Saturday in Waimanalo on "Alternatives to Pesticides."

Sponsored by the Kailua Bay Advisory Council, the workshop takes place 2 to 6 p.m. at C & L Nursery, 41-665 Kaulukanu St.

Jon Biloon will talk about balancing soil for potted plants and gardens, and applying foliar sprays, humates and biological inoculants. Hank Liljedahl will discuss using neem and making the transition to nontoxic practices.

Participants will observe plants grown both chemically and organically.

Marines dedicate new barracks

The Marines Corps is set to dedicate a new $18.3 million junior enlisted barracks facility consisting of three buildings with 150 rooms. The barracks will house 300 1st Radio Battalion and 3rd Marine Regiment Marines, officials said yesterday.

Dedication is scheduled today at Marine Corps Base Hawai'i at Kane'ohe Bay.

The project is part of a congressional effort that has created 1,612 new spaces for Marines and sailors at the base between fiscal years 1997 and 2001, said Marine Corps spokesman 1st Lt. Kent Robbins.

Candidates debate tonight

Candidates for governor will take part in a live TV debate tonight as part of the "Vote! 2002: Candidates Debate" series sponsored by 'Olelo Community Television.

The debate will air from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Oceanic Channel 54 and Oceanic Digital Control.

Participating will be nonpartisan candidate Jim Brewer, Daniel Cunningham of the Free Energy Party and Libertarian Tracy Ryan.

Voting rights topic of talk

An attorney with the U.S. Justice Department will discuss voting rights at a community gathering from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. today at the State Capitol Conference Room 309.

David Becker of the Justice Department's Voting Section will be the featured speaker. His office is in charge of enforcing the Voting Rights Act, which requires certain jurisdictions to provide written materials and assistance to voters who speak certain languages.

On O'ahu, this would include voters who speak Chinese, Tagalog and Japanese. On Maui, Tagalog speakers fall in this group.

Seminar offered on infertility

A day-long seminar on infertility will be held Saturday for anyone who has been trying to conceive a child for more than six months.

The event, sponsored by Resolve of Hawaii, takes place at the Queen's Conference Center, Mabel Smyth Auditorium, 510 S. Beretania St.

The cost is $55 for couples, $35 for individuals, with discounts for Resolve members. The fee includes continental breakfast and lunch.

Conference chairwoman Dot Shigemura estimates that more than 10,000 couples in Hawai'i are having difficulty starting or expanding a family. The program will include fertility issues, in vitro fertilization, egg donation and the impact of infertility on relationships.

Validated parking is available at the Queen's Medical Center's Miller Street garage.
