6-4 center commits to Wahine basketball

Christen Roper's senior season doesn't start for 17 days, but the search is already partially complete to fill her rather large sneakers.

Brittany Grice, a 6-foot-4 senior center from Redondo Union High School (Calif.), said she made a verbal commitment to the University of Hawai'i Monday.

Grice visited UH last weekend. She also made visits to Utah, Lehigh, Denver and St. Mary's (Calif.).

Grice said the Rainbow Wahine coaches told her she was recruited to take Roper's role as a defensive presence, rebounder and scorer.

"Christen Roper is awesome," Grice says. "And she came from nearby in California, too. That's kinda cool. She does a lot for them. I hope to fill her shoes, and they are definitely big shoes."

To be successful in college, Grice believes she needs to work on her footwork and quickness. She is not worried about the physical nature of the college game.

"I'm not one of those finesse players," she said. "You could call me a banger. My strength is good."

Hawai'i also has verbal commitments from McKinley High forward Amber Lee and Kaimuki High wing Dalia Solia for the 2003-2004 season.
