Isle woman wins triathlon

Advertiser Staff

Honolulu's Wendy Minor, 56, won the Nissan XTERRA USA Championship triathlon in the 55-59 age group bracket Sunday at Lake Tahoe, Nev.

The course featured a 1.5-kilometer swim in Lake Tahoe, a 32-kilometer mountain bike ride that climbed 2,500 feet, and a 10-kilometer trail run that traversed forest trails around the lake.Ê

Minor became the first female XTERRA national champion in the 55-59 age bracket. She finished the race in 5 hours, 32 minutes and 46 seconds.

Jaime Whitmore, of Elk Grove, Calif., won the women's title in 3:07:25, while Conrad Stoltz, of Stellenbosch, South Africa, won the men's title in 2:36:38.

SURFING

• Rare finish: All remaining heats in the men's division of the Figueira Pro surfing contest were canceled yesterday because of poor conditions at Figueira da Foz, Portugal.

The contest was able to run only three rounds during the eight-day holding period.

The 16 remaining surfers in the fourth round — including Hawai'i's Andy Irons and Kalani Robb — will all be considered tied for ninth place, and receive $11,125 each.

It is the fourth time in the 27-year history of surfing's World Championship Tour that a contest was canceled before completion.

The next stop, the Quiksilver Pro in France, is scheduled to begin tomorrow.

Irons remains No. 1 in the overall tour ratings with 5,092 points.

SOCCER

• Top defender: University of Hawai'i women's soccer player Jessica Uecker was named Western Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week for her efforts during Hawai'i's 6-1 victory over Long Island University Thursday.

Uecker, a sophomore central defender from Rapid City, S.D., helped Hawai'i end its four-match losing streak by limiting the Blackbirds to just two shots on goal.

Uecker, a transfer from South Carolina, has anchored the Hawai'i defense that has been thinned by injuries.

GOLF

• Unhappy ending: The University of Hawai'i men's and women's teams finished in last place in their respective tournament yesterday.

The men shot a three-day total of 900 to place 14th at the Pacific Invitational in Stockton, Calif.

The women shot a two-day total of 659 to finish seventh in the Pioneer Highlands Ranch Intercollegiate in Ranch, Colo.

UCLA (830) won the Pacific Invitational, and Iowa State (595) took the Pioneer Intercollegiate title.

The top male UH finisher was James Beston, who tied for 38th at 218. Tara Chappell led the UH women with 153, finishing in a tie for 13th.

• Gateway final: Regan Lee fired five birdies at the TPC of Scottsdale Stadium Course yesterday and shot a 2-under-par 69 in the second round of The Epson Tour Championship.

Halfway through The Gateway Tour finale, Lee is tied for 30th at even-par 142. The leaders are David Howser (64), Mike Louden (66) and Wade White (67) at 8-under 134.

• Junior Ryders: Maui's Shaun Felchner and partner Colin Wilcox were the only Americans to win a match on the first day of the Junior Ryder Cup in Ireland.

Felchner, a Lahainaluna junior, and Wilcox defeated Benjamin Regent and Tony Raillard of France, 5 and 3, yesterday. But Europe leads the U.S., 4 1/2 to 1 1/2, going into today's final matches. Europe needs two wins in six mixed better-ball matches to secure victory.

VOLLEYBALL

• Same places: The Brigham Young-Hawai'i and Hawai'i Pacific University women's volleyball teams went undefeated last week and held on to their respective spots in the AVCA Division II Coaches Top 25 Poll released yesterday.

The Seasiders (11-0, 2-0 Pacific West Conference) remain at No. 2, 27 points behind Cal State-San Bernardino (12-0), while HPU (7-3, 2-0) sits at No. 24.
