A 27-year-old Hawai‘i Kai fisherman was killed today when he fell 200 feet off a cliff at the Makapu‘u Lighthouse Trail.

Officer Fred Apo, who was in charge of the scene, talks on the phone as one of three friends who was with a man who fell to his death today at Makapu‘u consoles the man’s mother.

The man’s family identified him as Warren Matsuda, whose father Thomas "Tom" Matsuda was the Sheraton Waikiki Hotel sous chef stabbed to death on Dec. 1, 2000.

"The family is completely shocked and devastated with this most recent tragedy from what happened less than two years ago," said David Minkin, the Matsuda family’s attorney said today.

Warren Matsuda worked at Roy’s Restuarant in Hawai‘i Kai, Minkin said.

"She hasn’t even gotten over that and this happens," Colby Matsuda said while consoling her aunt, Colleen Matsuda, mother of Warren Matsuda.

Three friends who also were hiking down to a fishing spot with Warren Matsuda were unhurt.

Firefighters recovered Matsuda’s body, who was reported missing by his companions at 6:39 a.m. According to police, the four men had gone fishing about 3 a.m. and were on the Lighthouse Trail headed toward the lookout point. They did not immediately realize their companion was missing.

After waiting an hour, they borrowed a cellular telephone from a tourist at the lookout and reported their friend missing, said Fire Department spokesman Capt. Richard Soo.

A fire company and helicopter searched for the missing man. The body was found by the helicopter.
