Mink no better or worse, family reports

By Mike Gordon
Advertiser Staff Writer

The condition of ailing U.S. Rep. Patsy Mink is not getting better or worse and a prognosis for the congresswoman, who has been hospitalized in a Honolulu intensive care unit for 27 days with viral pneumonia, may come today, a family spokesman said.

"She is not improving. She is not getting worse. She is just stable," said Andrew Winer, director of the Democratic Party Coordinated Campaign. "Her condition is still the same."

Mink, 74, has been in the intensive care unit of Straub Clinic & Hospital since Sept. 1 after being hospitalized for viral pneumonia brought on by chicken pox.

Her family has withheld information on her exact medical condition and until today, her staff has only said that Mink is "serious but stable."

Winer, who took over as the Mink family spokesman yesterday, said a lengthy meeting is planned with the congresswoman's relatives later today. Winer believes the family plans to release Mink's prognosis sometime soon.

"The sense I got from talking to them is they are finally getting some answers," Winer said. "I think (her prognosis) has been a question on their mind. My sense is that feedback is coming."

Mink, a Democrat, is running for re-election. She easily won the Democratic nomination for her 2nd District seat in Saturday's primary election. She will face state Rep. Bob McDermott in the general election Nov. 5.
