HPD to graduate 22 recruits

By Scott Ishikawa
Advertiser Staff Writer

The 22 members of the Honolulu Police Department's 141st recruit class will graduate at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Hawai'i Okinawa Center.

Police Chief Lee Donohue and recruit Michele Yoshiki are scheduled to speak.

Members of the graduating class — 18 men and four women — will be assigned to patrol duties with veteran officers for hands-on training.

Five awards will be presented: highest firearms score, best athletic ability, class scholar, most inspirational recruit and outstanding leader.

Tuesday also is the application deadline for anyone wanting to take the Nov. 16 written test to become a Honolulu police officer. Applications and information are available at police stations on O'ahu, satellite city halls and the city Department of Human Resources and on the HPD's Web site, www.honolulupd.org.

Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents, 20 or older. They must have a high school diploma or equivalent, as well as a driver's license, and be legally eligible to carry firearms. Character and background checks, psychological screening and medical and polygraph examinations will follow successful passage of the written exam.

As of July 1, recruits' salary started at $2,784 per month, plus benefits. After 18 months of satisfactory service as a metropolitan police recruit, they are eligible for promotion to metropolitan police officer I, at a salary of $3,006 per month.
