Man surrenders after bank holdup

A 42-year-old man suspected of robbing the downtown branch of Bank of Hawaii on Wednesday turned himself to authorities yesterday afternoon, FBI agent James Stern said.

A man entered the branch at 111 S. King Street at 7:41 a.m. Wednesday, handed the teller a note demanding money, then ran off with an undisclosed amount of cash, police said.

Waipahu cave-in victim identified

The bottle hunter killed last Friday night in a cave-in near the old Waipahu Sugar Mill site off Waipahu Street has been identified by the city medical examiner's office as Billy Bayudan, 55.

Bayudan, who had no permanent local address, had been digging for old bottles with two other men at the Alexander & Baldwin construction site when the ground caved in at about 7 p.m. Friday. His body was found the following day under 6 feet of dirt.

Four at mall held in vehicle theft

Police arrested four men on Tuesday suspected of occupying a stolen vehicle at Ala Moana Center. One of the four confessed that he had helped in an earlier theft at the shopping center, police said.

The four were arrested at 1:50 p.m. after they arrived in a stolen car during a sting operation conducted by police and center security, police said.

During an interview with investigators, one of the suspects admitted to being involved in a June 19 auto break-in at the center in which a 'ukulele valued at $1,000 was stolen, police said. The four were released pending further investigation, police said.

Hilo sex assault suspect sought

Big Island police are looking for a man who sexually assaulted and robbed a woman Wednesday morning in an apartment in the Waiakea Houselots area.

Responding to a 5:36 a.m. report of a break-in Wednesday, Hilo patrol officers determined that a woman had been awakened in her apartment by an intruder who sexually assaulted her, according to police.

The victim said that when the man left, he took a small maroon, flower-patterned backpack that contained a small amount of cash and her medical cards, police said.

Anyone with information about the break-in or the man is asked to call Detective Randal Ishii of the Hilo Juvenile Aid Section at 961-2287 or the police nonemergency number at 935-3311.

Puna vandal fells 145 papaya trees

Puna police are looking for the person or people responsible for cutting down 145 papaya trees in an area above the Shipman Ballpark in Kea'au.

The owner of the papaya plants walked into the Kea'au Police Station Wednesday morning and reported that the trees had been cut down sometime between Monday and Wednesday.
