Brushfire continues to burn in Kalihi

Advertiser Staff

Honlulu Fire Department firefighters were still battling a brushfire this afternoon in Kalihi Valley behind Kalihi Elementary School.

HFD Capt. Kenison Tejada said the fire, which has been contained, has burned about 50 acres. He said 15 firefighters and a helicopter were fighting the fire this afternoon. Tejada said the main problem is that the fire is in a very difficult area to reach.

The firefighters were working their way down from the top of the ridges toward the brushire, which is about half-way up. No buildings are immediately threatened by the fire, which is in a remote area.

Firefighters are watching the area tonight and will resume trying to extinguish it tomorrow morning.
