Art Calendar

 •  'otheradio' is sonic art

Mark your calendar for a special opening of "otheradio," an interactive sound installation by Thomas Wasson, 6 to 9 p.m Oct. 11 at workspace. "It is the time for sound," says Thomas Wasson, who has invented interactive instruments that will be "harnessed to FM radio waves" for an installation that will run Oct. 9-12. Wasson said he is "fascinated by an art form that exists out there in the ether."

Sounds from the sculptural instruments (some are transmitters, some are receivers) will be simultaneously broadcast on the radio between the 88.1 and the 90.3 FM band. The sounds on the radio will be made on low-power transmitters in this closed-loop system by people in the gallery (who are playing directly with the instruments or near them).

Wasson hopes to collaborate with other sound artists at the opening.
