BYU-Hawai'i holds off Chaminade in 5

Yu Chuan Weng had 23 kills to lead Brigham Young-Hawai'i to a 21-30, 30-14, 30-26, 22-30, 15-9 Pacific West Conference women's volleyball victory over Chaminade at McCabe Gym last night.

No. 2 BYUH is 12-0 overall, 3-0 in the Pacific West. Chaminade is 9-2 and 3-1.

Valasi Sepulona had 16 kills for Chaminade.


CROSS COUNTRY

• UH runners fifth: The University of Hawai'i cross country team finished fifth yesterday in the 4K race at the Stanford Invitational at Stanford, Calif.

Junior Victoria Chang led the Rainbow Wahine in the 16-team field, finishing eighth overall in 14:37. Freshman Hanna Bremler was 11th in 14:44. Emilie Mondor of Simon Fraser (Canada) won the race in 13:32.

Host Stanford won the 4K race with 75 points, followed by Wisconsin with 83. Hawai'i had 137 points.

In the women's 6K race, Portland State sophomore Annie Kawasaki (St. Francis, '01) finished 53rd (22:31) and San Diego State freshman Christal Cuadra (Maryknoll, '02) was 71st (22:50).

• HPU continues dominance: The Hawai'i Pacific men's and women's cross country teams won both team and individual titles yesterday at the Brigham Young-Hawai'i Invitational in La'ie.

The men's team swept the top five places in the 8K race to score a perfect 15. Christian Madsen led the Sea Warriors at 27:13, followed by Abdeslam Naji in 27:28.

Sayuri Kusutani won the women's 5K race in 18:19. Teammate Nina Christensen did not compete yesterday due to illness.


MEETINGS

• QB Club: Kanani Souza, head football coach for The Kamehameha Schools, is scheduled to speak at tomorrow's Honolulu Quarterback Club.

The Warriors, ranked No. 2 in The Honolulu Advertiser Top 10, defeated No. 1 St. Louis, 41-20, Friday night at Aloha Stadium.

Also scheduled to speak are University of Hawai'i assistant football coaches Vantz Singletary and Tyson Helton.

Lunch is at 11:30 a.m., followed by the program at noon at Pagoda Restaurant.

• Na Koa: University of Hawai'i head football coach June Jones and assistant coach Rich Miano will show game film and provide analysis from the Southern Methodist game at tomorrow's meeting of the Na Koa Football Club.
