Firefighters today were trying to contain a brushfire on a ridge behind Kalihi Elementary School. The fire has been burning since 3:30 p.m. Saturday but posed no immediate threat to property at mid-morning, Fire Department spokesman Capt. Richard Soo said.

Twelve firefighters were taken to the ridge by helicopter this morning to set up firebreaks and put out hot spots, Soo said.

"There's some concern for (Hawaiian Electric Co.) power poles up on the ridge since some have been scorched," he added.

The key factor is preventing the fire from spreading into drier areas over the ridge, which could present a threat to property.

Child's injuries investigated

Police are investigating injuries to a 16-month girl admitted Saturday to Kaiser Permanente Moanalua Medical Center's emergency room with bleeding from both ears.

The hospital notified Child Protective Service and police when X-rays determined the child had a fractured skull.

The girl is in satisfactory condition, police said.

Trial set in video voyeur allegation

A 49-year-old man accused of taking video shots under women's skirts as they were on an escalator at Ala Moana Center will be tried Nov. 4 on charges of violation of privacy, a felony.

If convicted, Tyler Takehara could be sentenced up to five years in jail.

Takehara recently resigned as Iolani School's intermediate boys basketball coach, said Charles Proctor, Iolani's assistant headmaster and dean of the upper school.

Takehara was a contract coach and not a member of the faculty, said Proctor.

Woman arrested in gun violation

Police arrested a 22-year-old Wai'anae woman Thursday on suspicion of possessing a stolen handgun.

The woman, who has been released pending further investigation, was a rear-seat passenger in a car driven by a man wanted on several outstanding warrants.

Haku Brown, 25, was arrested on a grand jury warrant charging him with second-degree theft.

In addition to the handgun, police found an unspecified quantity of illegal drugs in the car.
