Kalihi brushfire under control

Honolulu firefighters yesterday contained a brushfire on the ridges above Kalihi Valley that had been burning since 3:30 p.m. Saturday.

HFD Capt. Kenison Tejada said that the fire behind Kalihi Elementary School had burned about 50 acres. "We dropped water on it until about 5:30 p.m.," Tejada said. "The only places it is still burning are in inaccessible areas that we just can't get to."

He said a watch would be maintained throughout the night and firefighters would check on the fire again this morning. No homes were threatened.
