Public hearing on property tax set for Kaua'i

Advertiser Staff

The Kaua'i County Council will soon take up a measure that would freeze property tax valuations for all owner-occupied residences on Kaua'i at 2001 levels.

A public hearing on the bill, introduced by County Council Chairman Ron Kouchi, is scheduled Oct. 10.

The proposed freeze is a reflection of Kaua'i's skyrocketing real estate market.

Property valuations are based on the sales price of similar homes in the same area. In some cases, homeowner property valuations have increased as much as 600 percent because of the high sales prices of neighboring homes. Kouchi said he would like to see the bill passed by the end of the year so that it would be in effect for the 2003 tax year.
