Air Canada plans bankruptcy filing

Advertiser News Services

Air Canada said today it was filing for bankruptcy protection from creditors, seeking time to reorganize its business and negotiate concessions from unions and help from the government.

Air Canada is by far Canada's largest airline and the only scheduled Canadian carrier with an extensive route network to the United States and other foreign destinations. It employs more than 30,000 people overall.

The move means Air Canada will continue flying during a reorganization period. From Honolulu, Air Canada has two daily flights to Vancouver, one daily flight to Sydney and five flights a week to Toronto. From Kahului, Air Canada flies once a week to Calgary and five times a week to Vancouver, according to the airline's online timetable.
