Lingle mum on nominees for Hawai'i Supreme Court

Associated Press

Gov. Linda Lingle reserved comment yesterday on the two Honolulu lawyers and four circuit judges submitted to her for appointment as an associate justice on the Hawai'i Supreme Court.

Lingle said she didn't want to prejudge any of the six candidates sent to her by the state Judicial Selection Commission.

"Everyone has pointed out, and rightfully so, that history would show that whether someone was liberal or conservative when you appoint them, they don't always turn out that way once they get on the bench," Lingle said.

"I don't want to prejudge how any of them might act if they got this appointment, but we will take them all very seriously and take time to get to know them."

The candidates are Circuit Judges Eden Elizabeth Hifo, Sabrina S. McKenna, Richard K. Perkins and Richard W. Pollack, and attorneys Lowell Chun-Hoon and James E. Duffy Jr.

"I don't know any of the people personally and I think that's a plus, because now I can get to know them a little bit as individuals," Lingle said.

Lingle will also be replacing Honolulu Circuit Judge Wilfred K. Watanabe, who also is retiring.

The candidates sent to her by the commission include District Judges Gerald Kibe and Rhonda Nishimura and attorneys John Gillmor, Ronette Kawakami, Peter Stone and Michael Tanigawa.
