Carl English, the Hawai'i men's basketball team's all-star guard, is expected to declare for early entry into the NBA Draft today.

English just completed his junior season with the Rainbow Warriors and has one more season of eligibility remaining.

He has scheduled a press conference for 3 p.m. today at the school.

He is not expected to sign with an agent, which would keep open the option of his return to UH for his senior season. If it appears that English may go undrafted, he has until June 19 to withdraw his name from the NBA Draft.

The NBA Draft, which consists of two rounds, is June 26.

English led the 'Bows with 19.6 points per game this past season, and was a first-team All-Western Athletic Conference selection. He also set a UH single-season record with 89 3-pointers, and ranks No. 7 on UH's all-time scoring list with 1,259 points.

English also ranked second on the team in assists (2.4 per game) and third in rebounds (5.4).

He scored 19 points in UH's season finale — an 84-70 loss at Minnesota in the second round of the National Invitation Tournament on March 24.

English also maintains a 3.28 grade point average as a liberal studies major, and was a third-team Verizon Academic All-America selection.

The 6 foot 5 shooting guard is expected to graduate from UH by this summer — one of the factors in his decision because he has said previously that he has no interest in pursuing a master's degree.

Because he redshirted his first season, English has already completed four years at UH.

English, from Patrick's Cove, Newfoundland, Canada, has said previously that declaring for early entry into the NBA Draft would not be out of financial need.

No other UH basketball player has ever declared for early entry into the NBA Draft.

Only 12 previous UH players have been drafted by an NBA team, and the last was Reggie Cross in the second round of the 1989 draft by Philadelphia.

Predrag Savovic, English's teammate last season, went undrafted last year and then signed as a free agent with the Denver Nuggets.
