Iolani to name coach for soccer by April 15

By Dennis Anderson
Advertiser Staff Writer

Iolani athletic director Judy Hiramoto is interviewing 16 applicants for head boys soccer coach and expects to name a new coach by April 15.

She said no more applications would be accepted and she could not reveal names of applicants because she had promised them confidentiality.

Veteran coach Myles Arakawa resigned under pressure in December and the entire team was suspended for a week after a hazing incident during a November trip to the Big Island.

Jeff Hackler, a former Iolani player, served as interim head coach for the remainder of the season but said he is not a candidate for the permanent job. "I just stepped in to help right the ship, but I don't have time to coach permanently," Hackler said.

Chris Lee, a 1988 Iolani graduate and an assistant to Arakawa since 1992, and Arakawa confirmed they are among applicants for the permanent position.

Almanac available

The 2002 HSN Almanac, 694 pages of facts on the 2001-02 high-school sports seasons in Hawai'i, was mailed last week to advance purchasers.

The book was compiled by the staff of Hawai'i Sports Network, led by historian Thomas Yoshida, and designed by Gonzalez Design. It is the first time complete results of all 30 Hawai'i High School Athletic Association championship tournaments have been assembled under one cover.

HSN officials are proud of their project, but admit copies are not flying off shelves. Part of the reason might be the book is virtually unpromoted. There are no sales pitches on the HSN Web site and a search of the site turns up no mention of it.

The books are available through Watermark Publishing by calling 587-7766.
