Coogan hurls no-hitter for UH softball

Advertiser Staff

Melissa Coogan pitched a five-inning no-hitter and April Crowell hit a grand slam to lead the University of Hawai'i over host North Carolina-Greensboro, 10-0, in the first game of a non-conference softball doubleheader yesterday.

In the second game, the Spartans (23-8) beat the Rainbow Wahine, 5-4. In the loss, Stacey Porter hit her seventh home run of the season, giving her 28 in her career and placing her one shy of Dana Degan's UH career mark.

Crowell also homered in the second game, giving her a team-leading nine home runs.

Coogan (15-7) faced only one batter over the minimum because she hit Jennifer Hubbard with a pitch. She struck out four in a game called after five complete innings because of softball's eight-run differential mercy rule.

Denise Dahlberg batted 2-for-3 with three RBIs.

Hawai'i (19-14) opens Western Athletic Conference play with doubleheaders Friday and Saturday at Fresno State.
