Maui events will kick off Relay for Life

Advertiser Staff

Need a Teflon excuse to party all night?

Twenty-two communities on O'ahu, Maui, the Big Island, Kaua'i and Moloka'i are gearing up for the American Cancer Society's annual Relay for Life. The fund-raiser brings individuals, businesses and community groups together for a 12-hour, dusk-'til-dawn relay around designated tracks around the country.

The first two Hawai'i relays will take place on Maui (War Memorial soccer field and Kalama Park) today. Relays on other islands are scheduled throughout the summer.

Food, music, games and contests typically make for a campout carnival atmosphere, but there's plenty of poignancy, too. The event begins with a first lap by cancer survivors. There's also an after-dark luminaria service in which memorial candles are placed around the track.
