Iraqi forces: Neither Iraq nor the coalition has given an estimate of military casualties. Iraq says nearly 500 civilians have been killed and more than 4,000 wounded.

Q. The U.S. government and its military briefers keep talking about coalition forces. How many troops are involved besides the U.S. forces?

A. About 48,000. But 45,000 of those are British troops. Other contributors: Australia, 2,000; Poland, 200; the Czech Republic and neighboring Slovakia, 400; and Denmark, which sent the crews of a submarine and an escort vessel. The U.S. contingent soon will be nearly 350,000.

South Korea is to dispatch 600 military engineers and 100 medics to join the coalition.

1st Marine Division

Ten thousand Marines from the 1st Marine Division moved to within 10 miles of the Baghdad city limits yesterday.

The 1st Marine Division is composed of the 1st, 5th, 7th and 11th regiments; Headquarters Battalion; 1st Combat Engineer Battalion; 3rd Assault Amphibian Battalion; 1st Tank Battalion; and the 1st and 3rd Light Armored Reconnaissance battalions. These units represent a force of more than 15,000.
