Round one of the Interscholastic League of Honolulu girls basketball series between Punahou and Kamehameha went to Punahou last night, with the Buffanblu holding off the host Warriors 45-37 before a crowd of about 900 at Kekuhaupi'o Fieldhouse.

But for these perennial powerhouses, who met six times last season culminating in the state championship game, it served only as a preliminary for other showdowns down the road.

"Definitely," said Elyse Umeda, a senior point guard who finished with 10 points. "Kamehameha and Punahou games always go down to the wire. Both teams have a lot of heart, that's why they're good games. It's going to be even better next time."

Last night's opening chapter wasn't a bad start, except for some poor first-half shooting by the Warriors (6-1). Kamehameha made just 4 of 20 field goals, helping the Buffanblu (7-0) take a 14-7 lead after one period and go up 25-14 at intermission.

Punahou stretched the lead to 34-18 early in the third quarter, but the Warriors closed to 38-31 entering the fourth.

The Buffanblu then played keepaway and held on for the victory. Kamehameha finished with 14 field goals in 45 attempts (31 percent).

"We weren't patient enough to take good shots in the first half, and then we got down in a hole," Warriors coach Clay Cockett said. "We were 16 down, and we had to work real hard to get it to seven. By that time, we ran out of fuel."

Punahou helped drain Kamehameha's energy by letting guards Umeda, Rachel Kane and Shanna-Lei Dacanay milk the clock with their exceptional dribbling and passing skills in the backcourt.

"We've got three good guards who can handle it," Buffanblu coach Mike Taylor said. "We also have good leadership from our three senior captains, Elyse, Rachel and Becky (Hogue). They had a big desire to play their best basketball tonight."

Hogue finished with a game-high 12 points and also grabbed six rebounds. Punahou also got a combined 11 points off the bench from Ki'i LaVine, Makena Hunt, Eryn Chun and Tessa Sonobe. The production came in handy, especially after starter Christine Takara was sent to the sidelines with her third foul midway through the second period.

"Our bench was huge tonight," Taylor said. "It shows the depth we have on this team."

The Warriors, meanwhile, were hurt by more than just poor shooting. Their best defensive player, Lehua Wood, picked up her second foul in the first period and sat out the rest of the half. In addition, speedy guard India Soo did not suit up for the game.

"She just has some personal things to take care of," Cockett said. "She'll be back."

So will the rest of the Warriors, according to Taylor.

"They're gonna get a lot better," Taylor said. "And we will, too."
