6 experts to build theoretical portfolios

By David Butts
Advertiser Staff Writer

Building a successful portfolio in volatile times is a challenge.

What is the proper mix of investments?

Should you seek the safety of bonds even though many economists think interest rates could rise later this year, eroding the value of bonds?

Do you want to be in stocks when the main stock indices have lost ground in each of the past three years?

Is it safe to leave your money in certificates of deposit or other cash instruments when interest rates are so low that inflation or taxes could eat up your returns?

Opinions vary and ultimately the right answer for you will depend on your situation and how much risk you can tolerate.

The one thing that is certain is the more you learn, the better equipped you will be to build a winning portfolio.

Starting this month, The Advertiser will ask six of Hawai'i's financial professionals to create portfolios while our readers watch.

At the end of each month, you will see in our Sunday business section what investments these six professionals selected, how those investments performed and what the professionals who created them say about their strategy and the current market.

Each professional will manage a theoretical $100,000 portfolio for a fictitious client who is saving for retirement in 15 years. They will be investing in stocks, bonds and mutual funds.

Following along as these six professionals decide what to buy, when to buy and when to sell will hopefully give you some insight into investing in these times.

It must be noted that these portfolios are in no way to be viewed as a recommendation for any particular investment. Your needs will depend on your particular circumstances. Before investing in any security, you should read the appropriate prospectus and carefully consider if it is right for you.
