Kahuku remains unbeaten in OIA

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

Even with its best athlete sidelined with a fractured finger, the Kahuku High School girls basketball team was much too athletic for visiting McKinley last night.

The Red Raiders sprinted past the defending O'ahu Interscholastic Association Eastern Division champion Tigers, 63-48, in a matchup of unbeaten teams. Kahuku improved to 5-0, while McKinley fell to 3-1.

The Red Raiders have stayed perfect despite missing Tuli Peters, The Advertiser's State Player of the Year in volleyball and a returning starter in basketball, since she fractured the pinkie on her right (shooting) hand four weeks ago.

Peters is expected to be cleared for a return in two weeks.

"We've just been believing in ourselves and playing as a team," said junior forward Mona Ale, who scored nine of her 14 points in the first period. "We've had to adjust without Tuli, but we have a lot of good players."

That was evident from the opening tip last night, when the Red Raiders began to exhibit their swift transition game and deft shot-making abilities. Ale scored Kahuku's first nine points, and then the Red Raiders got points from Karla Tailele, Camilla Ah Hoy, Aisha Ale and Lesina Funaki to finish the period with an 11-0 run to go up 20-8.

Kahuku got more easy baskets in transition to take a 36-20 lead into halftime.

"Determination and focus — that's what we've been working on all week," Red Raiders coach Wendy Anae said. "We're pretty deep, and the players have been working hard. We're coming around as a team."

The Tigers, meanwhile, struggled to contain Kahuku in the open court and never really got into a rhythm on offense. McKinley's Amber Lee, an Advertiser first-team All-State center who signed with the University of Hawai'i, finished with 14 points but had to work for every one of them. The Red Raiders quickly collapsed on Lee whenever she got the ball in the post, and the Tigers scored only sporadically from the perimeter.

McKinley never got closer than 11 points the rest of the game.

"Our guards needed to shoot and play better defense, and they didn't do that," McKinley coach Jesse Victorino said. "But that's a tribute to Kahuku's guards, too. As far as athletes, (the Red Raiders) are definitely the best in the OIA, maybe the state. And they'll be even better yet when Tuli comes back. They're gonna be awesome."
