• The lure of Hawai'i as a haven in an increasingly threatening world — especially with the ongoing threat of terrorism and the war in Iraq — and the potential of sports tourism to "fill-in" during lulls in visitor arrivals will be discussed in an upcoming discussion, "SAFE HAVEN, SPORTS HAVEN?" The panel discussion, sponsored by The Hawaii Society of Corporate Planners, is one of an on-going series on Hawai'i's transition to a new global economy. Don Robbs, KKEA Sports and Talk Radio operations manager, and longtime expert on local sports, will moderate a panel composed of Tom Kiely, a local leader in sports marketing; Manny Menendez, executive director of the city Office of Economic Development, and Dr. Jim Barahal, president of the Honolulu Marathon. • The latest in new products and consumer services will be on view at the upcoming 28th Annual Spring New Products Show, scheduled April 25 to 27 at the Blaisdell Center, Exhibition Hall. On view will be the latest in boats, cars and motorcycles, home-improvement products and surfing supplies; and fashion shows of the latest for spring, prom and active wear. • Today is the last day to make reservations at the local chapter of the American Marketing Association's 2002 Marketer of the Year Luncheon, honoring McDonald's of Hawaii, scheduled 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. April 16 in the Sheraton Waikiki Hotel's Kaua'i-Maui-Moloka'i Ballrooms. • The St. Francis Healthcare Foundation will have two free public seminars this week on "WEALTH PRESERVATION." The seminars, offering advice about taxes, real estate, insurance and charitable remainder trusts, are scheduled 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. tomorrow in the 'Ilima Room of the Ala Moana Hotel; and 5:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday in Conference Room C of the Weinberg Pavilion, St. Francis Medical Center. • The Samoan Service Providers Association Business Service Center has scheduled an 11-week entrepreneurial training course, "SMARTSTART BUSINESS READINESS," for prospective business owners. • The MINORITY BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT CENTER OF HONOLULU will offer free weekly orientation sessions to minority business owners and prospective entrepreneurs. The sessions, scheduled 9 to 10:30 a.m. every Tuesday in the center's offices in Suite 2506 of the Executive Center, 1088 Bishop St., will offer advice on business startup, marketing plans, loans, employee handbooks and access to capital. • A free COMPUTER BOOT CAMP is offered 3 to 4 p.m. Tuesdays to all small business owners interested in using computer technology to improve and expand business operations and management. The program is sponsored by the Small Business Resource Center, in partnership with the Small Business Administration, the city Office of Economic Development, Hawai'i Small Business Development Center Network, Hawai'i Women's Business Center, and SCORE. The program is open to all clients of the center who have attended a center orientation, offered 9 a.m. Tuesdays or 2 p.m. Thursdays at 1041 Nu'uanu Ave., (#A).
