Native Hawaiians to honor King and Hulihee

Advertiser Staff

The Native Hawaiian Chamber of Commerce will honor Edwin S. Hulihee, founder of Royal Contracting Co., and Samuel P. King Sr., chief judge emeritus of the U.S. District Court, at the 27th annual O'o Awards dinner tomorrow.

The event will begin at 5 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency Ballroom in Waikiki. No-host cocktails and silent auction will be from 5 to 7 p.m., dinner at 7 p.m. and the awards program at 8 p.m.

Hulihee began his career at Hickam Air Force Base, as a mechanic. After a stint in the U.S. Merchant Marines, he worked for construction companies and established his own in 1961.

King, son of Samuel Wilder King, a former territorial governor, was born in Hankow, China. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy Reserves as a Japanese language specialist, retiring in 1967.

In 1946, King entered private law practice and was appointed a district magistrate in 1956. He also served on the circuit, family and land courts, and was named to a federal district judge post in 1972.

He is one of the community leaders who authored the "Broken Trust" critique of the Bishop Estate.

Proceeds from the dinner benefit a scholarship fund for Native Hawaiians.

Tickets: $55. Reservations: 306-1934.
