CENTRAL

Schofield man dies in crash

One Schofield man is dead and another faces charges of negligent homicide after a single car accident late Saturday on the H-2 Freeway in Waipi'o.

Police said the 19-year-old driver of a 2000 Lincoln Continental was southbound on H-2 and speeding when he lost control of the car. The Lincoln crossed a lane of traffic, went off the shoulder and climbed an embankment before falling roof-first back onto the highway.

The 22-year-old passenger, was ejected from the car and suffered multiple injuries. He died at The Queen's Medical Center.

The driver was treated at Queen's for minor injuries.

Both men had Schofield Army addresses, police said. Alcohol and speeding appeared to be factors, according to police.


'Ewa Beach cleanup planned

The 'Ewa Beach Weed & Seed Program will sponsor a community cleanup from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. April 26 at the 'Ewa Beach Community Park on North Road.

The cleanup, the first one solely under the Weed & Seed program, includes picking up trash and painting over graffiti at the park and nearby Campbell High School.

Teens and their parents are welcome to help out. High schoolers should bring their school IDs to get volunteer extra credit. Helpers are encouraged to bring their own gloves, trash bags and old paint brushes.

HONOLULU

Rise in aircraft noise expected

Residents near the Sand Island and Honolulu Harbor areas might notice increased aircraft noise this week when the Department of Transportation closes one of the airport runways for repairs.

Runway 8R will be closed from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. today through Thursday for grading along the runway shoulder. Runway 8L will be used for departure during those hours.


Panel to discuss traffic calming

The Committee on Traffic Calming Participants Concerns of the Liliha/Pu'unui/'Alewa/Kamehameha Heights Neighborhood Board will meet at 6:30 tonight in the Lanakila Elementary School cafeteria, 717 N. Kuakini St.

The committee will discuss traffic calming concerns, findings and recommendations.

Help sought for annual cleanup

Nani 'O Wai'anae, the local chapter of Keep America Beautiful, is looking for volunteer site coordinators to head cleanup projects for the Great Hawai'i Clean-up for O'ahu on May 3.

The annual cleanup celebrates the 50th anniversary of Keep America Beautiful, a nonprofit public-education organization.

Coordinators will be provided with trash bags, gloves, posters and banners.
