Fresno State sweeps Hawai'i in softball

Advertiser Staff

A day after being swept in a softball doubleheader by visiting University of Hawai'i, the Fresno State Bulldogs returned the favor with 7-0 and 6-0 wins yesterday.

Jamie Southern (13-9) earned both pitching victories — a three-hit, nine-strikeout performance in the opener, and a six-hit, five-strikeout effort in the second.

Southern also batted 4-for-4, with a double and two RBIs in the first game.

Tracie Uchima had two of UH's three hits in the opener.

In the second game, Fresno State scored two runs with the help of three UH errors in the third inning, then moved out of reach with a four-run fifth inning spiced by Angelina Diaz's two-run single.

Fresno State improved to 20-17 overall while UH fell to 21-16. Both are 2-2 in the Western Athletic Conference.

MORE SOFTBALL

• HPU falls in semifinals: Cal State Bakersfield held off Hawai'i Pacific, 4-1, yesterday in the Gold Bracket Championship semifinals of the Easton Tournament of Champions at Modesto, Calif.

The Sea Warriors beat Sonoma State, 6-4, and Cal State Dominguez Hills, 4-2, earlier in the day to advance in the three-day, 20-team tournament.

Also yesterday, Chaminade beat San Francisco State, 1-0, and UC San Diego edged Hawai'i-Hilo, 1-0, in eight innings.

HPU was the lone Hawai'i team to reach bracket play, and the Sea Warriors made a strong bid to reach the title game.

HPU trailed 4-0 entering the seventh, but three of its first four batters singled with Brandy Choy Foo's hit making it 4-1 with one out.

That's when Erin Kelly replaced starter Christie Hill for Bakersfield and got the next two batters on strikeouts, leaving two runners stranded.

Choy Foo was named to the all-tournament first team while teammate Rachel Lacar, who batted 3-for-3 against Bakersfield, was chosen to the second team.

Jillian Umeda had Chaminade's lone hit in its win over San Francisco State. She led off the fourth with a single and eventually scored on an error.

Donnell Whittekind pitched a four-hitter for the Silverswords with two strikeouts.

Hilo lost a heart-breaker to UC San Diego as Leo Sing Chow pitched a two-hitter over eight innings with nine strikeouts.

Sing Chow allowed a single in the first and a single in the eighth that drove in the game's only run.

The Vulcans threatened in the bottom of the eighth, but — with the tying run on third — the final two batters grounded out.
