Copters used in utility-pole work

Helicopters are being used through the end of the week to transport people and materials into the back of Palolo Valley for an emergency repair project, according to Hawaiian Electric Co.

Crews are replacing three utility poles that were already deteriorating and failed Saturday before their scheduled replacement. Helicopter flights will continue between 8 a.m. and 7 p.m. to the work site until the job is complete.

The downed poles caused the loss of a 138-kilovolt transmission line that feeds into Hawaiian Electric's Pukele substation in the back of Palolo Valley.

Man killed in H-2 crash identified

The medical examiner's office has identified the Schofield Barracks man who died after a Saturday night car crash on the H-2 Freeway in Waipi'o as Marquel Roberts, 23, of Buffalo, N.Y.

Roberts died Sunday at The Queen's Medical Center. He was a passenger in a southbound 2000 Lincoln Continental, driven by a 19-year-old man. The car crossed a lane of traffic, went off the shoulder of the roadway and up an embankment before falling roof-first back onto the highway. The crash was reported at 11:22 p.m. Saturday.

Speed and alcohol appear to be factors, police said.

The car's driver was in guarded condition yesterday at Queen's.

Police, meanwhile, said a 16-year-old boy critically injured in a Feb. 19 motorcycle crash on Waialua Beach Road died at Queen's on March 23. His death was not previously reported. The medical examiner's office identified the boy as Micah Morris.
