3 from Hawai'i place in shooting

Krystle Sze , a junior at Sacred Hearts, took third place in the girls 15-17 years division Sunday in USA Shooting's Junior Olympics national championships at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Sze was 26th of 91 competitors overall.

State high school champion Vicki Yau, a Punahou senior, was ninth overall, competing in the 18-older, the oldest age group.

Shannon Li of Sacred Hearts was 19th in the 18-older division.

"The girls did really good," said Hawai 'i coach Zig Look.

Finals in small bore riflery will be tonight.

SWIMMING

Eckert at nationals: Iolani junior Mark Eckert Jr. swam his fastest times in two of four events but didn't finish higher than 24th at USA Swimming's Spring National Championships last week at Indianapolis, Ind.

Eckert recorded personal bests of 59.03 seconds in the 100-meter backstroke on Friday (more than a half-second faster than he has ever gone) and 2:10.13 in the 200 individual medley on Saturday.

He was the only entrant from Hawai'i. Eckert's marks:

  • Wednesday: 200 backstroke — 2:08.01, 37th of 50 finishers (was seeded 49th).
  • Thursday: 400 individual medley — 4:37.34, 24th of 37 finishers (was seeded 32nd).
  • Friday: 100 backstroke — 59.03, 26th of 50 finishers (first lap 28.61); was seeded 51st, previous personal best 59.60.
  • Saturday: 200 individual medley — 2:10.13, 33rd of 58 finishers (was seeded 56th, previous personal best 2:10.51). Splits by stroke: Back. 28.53; fly 32.38; breast. 39.06; free. 30.16.
