Saint Louis' Los Banos resigns as wrestling coach

Todd Los Banos, who coached Saint Louis School to state boys wrestling championships in 2001 and 2002, said he has resigned to give more time to his family.

Los Banos has been head coach at Saint Louis the past seven seasons and was an assistant at Iolani the previous 14 years. He also won a state championship at Iolani in 1990 as an interim head coach.

Los Banos, 39, is married and has a daughter, Jenna, 10, who he said is "very involved dancing with Ballet Hawai'i" and son, J.T., 7, who studies golf with Olomana pro Casey Nakama.

Los Banos played a role in coaching the only two boys wrestlers to win four state high school championships, Patrick Higa at Iolani 1983-86 and Jonathan Spiker at Saint Louis 2000-2003.

He also coached Travis Lee, now a sophomore at Cornell, who last month became the first wrestler from Hawai'i to win an NCAA Division I championship.

"I'm happy with the career I've had and I'm proud of all my boys," Los Banos said. "The biggest thing for me was having two All-Americans (Lee and Spiker). That finished off my career well."

Los Banos said he would continue to teach physical education at Saint Louis and would help with wrestling on a limited-time basis.
