Suspect charged in bank robbery

Murray Roy Fairman has been charged with robbing the Territorial Savings Bank's Kaimuki branch Nov. 21, according to papers filed in federal court yesterday.

The Honolulu Police Department released a bank surveillance photo of the suspect on the day of the robbery, and received a tip via the department's Crime Stoppers program Dec. 30 that a man named Murray had fled to the Mainland after robbing the bank, according to an affidavit attached to the criminal complaint.

On Jan. 22, a bank teller picked Fairman's picture out of a photographic lineup. On March 17, a confidential source also identified Fairman as the person whose image was captured by the surveillance camera, according to the affidavit.

Approximately $580 was taken during the robbery.

Kaua'i police chief sued by officer

A Kaua'i police officer is suing Police Chief George Freitas, claiming Freitas ignored his constant warnings that the head of the department's vice unit has ties to a crime organization that is involved in drug distribution and illegal gambling on Kaua'i.

The lawsuit — filed in federal court yesterday by lawyers Donna Richards and Mark Zenger of Kaua'i and Christopher Bouslog of Honolulu on behalf of Kaua'i police officer Mark Begley — claims Freitas took no action on Begley's concerns that Martin Curnan, head of the Kaua'i Police Department's vice and narcotics unit, had ties to what Begley called an organized crime group.

Freitas and Curnan could not be reached last night to comment.

The lawsuit asks for monetary damages with the amount to be determined at trial.

Couple sentenced in sex assault

A Kapolei man was sentenced yesterday to 20 years in prison, and his wife to a 10-year term, for sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl at their home during a six-month period ending in January 2001.

Victor Flores, 38, pleaded guilty to a single count of first-degree sexual assault in October. His wife, Celeste, pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree sexual assault.

Circuit Judge Karl Sakamoto imposed the sentences. The Hawaii Paroling Authority will determine how much time the two must serve before they are eligible for parole.
