Facility to be named after Inouye, Dole, Hart

Advertiser Washington Bureau

WASHINGTON — The federal government has renamed a former Army hospital in Michigan for Sen. Dan Inouye, D-Hawai'i, and two other senators who recovered from World War II injuries at the facility.

Inouye, former Sen. Robert Dole, R-Kan., and the late Sen. Phil Hart, D-Mich., were treated for combat injuries during their stay at the hospital in Battle Creek, which has since been converted into a Defense Logistics Agency facility.

Inouye, who served with the Army's 442nd Regimental Combat Team, was seriously injured and lost his right arm in combat in Italy.

"The courage and achievements of these three men are truly deserving of special recognition," said Stephen Perry, administrator of the General Services Administration, which manages federal real estate.

The Hart-Dole-Inouye Federal Center will be officially commemorated May 31 in a centennial ceremony for the facility, which is on the National Register of Historic Places.
