Pearl City stops Campbell, stays unbeaten

While six or seven O'ahu Interscholastic Association Eastern Division teams fight it out in a balanced race, the OIA West has some exciting competition going on as well.

Pearl City held off visiting Campbell, 46-44, last night in a meeting of unbeaten co-defending West champions. The Chargers (5-0) led for most of the game and pulled it out in the fourth period behind Marci Lobendahn's six points, including 4-of-4 free-throw shooting.
Campbell's Jamie Kua takes a shot against Pearl City in the first quarter. Kua scored nine points in a 46-44 loss to the Chargers.
The Sabers (4-1) shot 5 of 12 from the foul line in the fourth quarter and 16 of 32 for the game.
"Free throws and turnovers that's been our problem throughout the year," Sabers coach Bigs Macdangdang said. "We gave those up too easily tonight."
In the first half, Campbell had its hands full trying to contain Pearl City's fluid guard, Christie Ayers, in the open court. Ayers scored six points in the first period and eight in the second, mostly on transition layups or free throws.
"She can take the ball from end-to-end," Macadangdang said. "She's tough to stop."
With Ayers leading the way, the Chargers built a 21-13 lead midway through the second quarter, but the Sabers closed to 29-26 by halftime thanks in large part to seven points from Jalen Garcia.
Campbell tightened its 2-3 zone in the third period and took a 35-34 lead going into the fourth. But Pearl City took the lead back for good at 41-39 on two free throws by Lobendahn with 5:38 remaining.
Jillan Soria's free throw with 24 seconds left gave the Chargers a 46-44 lead, and the Sabers failed to convert on their next two possessions.
Ayers, a 5-foot-7 senior, finished with a game-high 17 points but had just three points and one field goal in the second half.
"It's hard to play against a zone," Ayers said. "There's less openings."
Lobendahn added 12 points, five rebounds and one block for Pearl City, and Ayers also had four rebounds and three steals.
Garcia led Campbell with 11 points, despite going scoreless in the first and third periods.
Although Pearl City surprised many people last year by winning the West with only two seniors, the Chargers have now gone from the hunters to the hunted.
"You can see that everybody is shooting for us," Pearl City coach Mike Morton said. "The East is strong just like last year, but the West is getting better, with Campbell, Radford, 'Aiea and Leilehua. So we've gotta get better, too."
Said Ayers: "Overall, the East probably has more dominant teams. But there's some pretty good teams in the West, too."
